BWYQ

FOR EMPLOYERS

The British Wheel of Yoga Qualifications (BWYQ) approach to Employer Engagement has been to identify employers who hire qualified instructors in the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2020 code 3443 for Fitness and Wellbeing Instructors. We constructed a database from the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSPA) Employer Partners and we consulted the Dec 2022 ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) for code 3443: https://www.ons.gov.uk/file?uri=/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/earningsandworkinghours/datasets/occupation4digitsoc2010ashetable14/2022provisional/ashetable142022provisional.zip, a sub-code under Code 34 Culture, Media and Sports occupations. A Gender Pay Gap (GPG) of -11.8 was revealed which means that women earn 11.8% more than men in Code 3443, however ONS states that this can happen when a higher proportion of women work in certain occupations and this results in lower salaries. Also of interest is that the ONS ASHE does not cover self-employees, yet our sources tell us that many Fitness and Wellbeing Instructors work on a part-time self-employed basis, either under an hourly contract with health clubs, leisure centes, yoga/pilatescentres, etc. or as sole traders who hire space at community venues.

Our approach to Employer Engagement thus became multi-faceted because the learners on our qualifications in yoga and mindbody teacher training end up teaching group classes in a wide variety of places, the most common being:

  • Yoga and PilateCentres
  • Health Clubs
  • Leisure Cenres
  • Hotels
  • Holiday Resorts
  • Residential Care Homes
  • Community Centres
  • Church Halls / Village Halls
  • Charity Support Groups with exercise facilities
  • Outdoors
  • In their own homes

Some instructors are officially employed at places in the left hand column, but most are contracted hourly workers hired on a self-employed basis. During Covid many teachers switched to online class teaching either through the employer or on their own. Many decided to stay with online teaching.
